Harding women, UAM men take Great American titles

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- Sydnie Jones capped a career-best performance with the game-winning layup as Harding defeated Arkansas Tech 75-73 Sunday for the Great American Conference women's basketball title.

Jones banked home the game winner after rebounding teammate Peyton Padgett's missed three-point attempt. Kelsey McClure missed a running layup as time expired for Tech, the defending tournament champion.

Harding led by eight in the second half but trailed 73-69 inside the two-minute mark. A'ndrea Haney sank a driving layup and Caroline Hogue converted two free throws that tied the game.

Jones tallied 30 points, the second-best scoring output in a GAC women's title game, after scoring only 10 in the first two tourbament games. Earning MVP honors, she made 11 of 14 from the floor and added nine rebounds.

Haney and Hogue joined Jones on the eight-member all-tournament team. McClure, Anissa Pounds and Cheyenne North represented Tech, which hoped to become the first three-time GAC women's tournament champion.

Harding is bound for the NCAA Division II tournament for the third time in the last four years.
