Carlee Carmon received the Chadwick-Butterworth Memorial Scholarship from Hot Springs Chapter No. 80 UDC's President Martha Koon during NPC Nursing and Health Science Day on April 14.

The scholarship was established by members of the now-defunct Chadwick-Butterworth Chapter UDC in honor of student nurses graduating from National Park College and needing help with their licensing exam.

Carmon will be receiving her RN degree "due to her hard work and this deserving scholarship," a news release said.

"It was an honor to participate in the National Park College Nursing and Health Science Day," Koon said.

"Nurses have always played an important role in our history. The ladies of the South began many practices as nurses during the War Between the States. They helped to establish hospitals and better care for the veterans. They also provided medical aid and supplies, as well as food for the wounded on both sides of the war," the release said.

"Mary Davis, of North Carolina, created the red cross armband. Sarah 'Sallie' Law, of Memphis, Tennessee, was the first recorded Southern nurse in 1861. Following the war, Southern ladies continued to provide homes, food, clothing, and medical care to the wounded. During WWI and WWII, they established war bonds and provided war relief supplies to our nation's military. The different groups of women throughout the South joined together 126 years ago as the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Hot Springs Chapter No. 80 UDC is proud to recognize the strength and courage of the men and women in the field of nursing and health sciences," the release said.
